That’s why for financial literacy month in April, Meriwest Credit Union will focus on helping young people develop good saving habits. Meriwest will host a savings challenge for the entire month, encouraging young people to save for something they care about and offering prizes for participating. The theme of the event is Give a Hoot About Saving.
“Owls represent wisdom, and nothing is wiser than learning to save for one’s future goals,” said Jill Popolizio, Community Relations Manager. “By helping your child give a hoot about financial literacy now, you’ll help them soar when they’re older!”
In addition to the savings challenge, Meriwest will be partnering with the San José Public Library and their teensReach program to present workshops on financial education. teensReach is the youth council for the San José Public Library, providing a key way for young adults to build their leadership skills by developing and participating in library activities, as well as becoming library advisors and advocates. Members are recruited from all neighborhoods throughout San José and participate through teensReach chapters at local branch libraries. During the month of April, Meriwest will be presenting free financial workshops at ten teensReach chapters, to support the importance of savings, budgeting and building credit.
"Meriwest Credit Union’s free teen workshops have been a hit throughout the San Jose Public Library system,” said Amelia Vander Heide, Librarian, San Jose Public Library. “They have helped San Jose teens in filling educational gaps by making financial literacy approachable, engaging, and practical."
Like all credit unions, Meriwest is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. “Member education and concern for the community are part of the foundational principles of our business structure,” said Tony Cortez, SVP and Chief Experience Officer. “Passing along a crucial life skill to the next generation to prepare them for a bright future embodies both those principles.” To learn more about Youth Financial Literacy Month and our savings challenge, stop by any of our locations April 3-28th, 2017 or visit our website at www.meriwest.com/youthmonth.
