Meriwest Executives meet with Winners
SAN JOSE, CA – March 4, 2016 – “How important is credit to you? How do you plan to build good credit and manage it in your life after high school?” This was the question on the minds of many teenagers this past fall as they prepared to participate in Meriwest Credit Union’s Annual Essay Competition. Each year the essay competition proposes topics of discussion that allows young members to address issues that challenge credit unions regularly.
The Annual Essay Competition is open to high school students in grades 9-12 who are planning to continue their academic achievements in college. This year’s topic challenged them to think about the importance of credit in today’s world. Do they understand what credit means? Most students are learning about calculus, chemistry and world history, but very few are taught the fundamental money lessons to help them financially navigate the world. Learning how to manage their money responsibly and make good financial decisions now will help avoid debt problems in their future.
“We continue to be impressed by the effort students apply to researching the subject and the caliber of writing skills evidenced in the essays,” said Julie Kirsch, Meriwest Credit Union’s President and CEO. “It’s our pleasure to support these students as they prepare for the next phase of their educational journey and we wish them all the best.”
Through the Annual Essay Competition, Meriwest Credit Union is able to remain committed to nurturing the youth of our community through our support for their academics, their creativity, and their financial knowledge.
