Meriwest and FHLB of San Francisco Partner for $30K Grant

Supports Peninsula Family Service Inc. Senior Career Development

SAN JOSE, CA – October 21, 2013 – Older Adults on the Peninsula and in the South Bay Area will benefit from a recent $30,000 grant sponsored by Meriwest Credit Union through the Federal Home Loan Bank’s AHEAD Grant program; AHEAD stands for “Access to Housing and Economic Assistance for Development.” Meriwest Credit Union sponsored the grant request of Peninsula Family Service’s “Second Career Program.” For older adults who have been retired for many years and due to personal circumstances must re-enter the workforce, or anyone who has had an extended lay off from work and is attempting to return, the program provides paid internships and training in updating their computer skills and resumes, as well as job counseling and placement services. The $30,000 will support expansion of the program and provide funds for staff and materials.

The FHLB sets aside money each year from its profits to fund the AHEAD Grants. These grants are made to Bank and Credit Union members who sponsor local community groups’ grant requests. The Grants provide early-stage funding for targeted economic development projects and certain eligible housing initiatives that create benefits for low- and moderate-income communities. Previously, Meriwest Credit Union has assisted in accessing $65,000 in AHEAD Grant funding for their community partners.

(Proposed quote) “We are very pleased and thankful the FHLB has awarded the Peninsula Family Service’s Second Career Program with a $30,000 AHEAD Grant!” said Julie Kirsch, President and CEO of Meriwest Credit Union. “This grant can change the lives of many older adults in our region by getting them the help they need to build their personal job skills and find access to jobs.“

“We are thrilled to have the support of Meriwest Credit Union for the Second Careers Employment Program.’ said Arne Croce, Executive Director for Peninsula Family Service Inc., “This grant will help sustain the jobs of nearly 150 individuals currently participating in the program. Meriwest is a great community partner.”
