Supports Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence
SAN JOSE, CA – October 24, 2014 - Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence in the South Bay Area will benefit from a $20,000 grant sponsored by Meriwest Credit Union through the Federal Home Loan Bank’s AHEAD Grant program; AHEAD stands for “Access to Housing and Economic Assistance for Development.” Meriwest Credit Union sponsored the $20,000 grant to support Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence’s “Self Sufficiency Program”. The program offers victims of domestic violence weekly support groups; topic-specific workshops; a computer lab; an embedded advocate at the CalWORKs office, and individual case management that help them gain the tools and skills necessary for financial freedom and self-sufficiency.
The FHLB sets aside money each year from its profits to fund the AHEAD Grants. These grants are made to Bank and Credit Union members who sponsor local community groups’ grant requests. The Grants provide early-stage funding for targeted economic development projects and certain eligible housing initiatives that create benefits for low- and moderate-income communities.
“Through our membership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, we are extremely pleased to be able to sponsor requests from important agencies like Next Door Solutions who provides vital social and professional services to battered women in our community.” said Julie Kirsch, Meriwest Credit Union President and CEO. “We are honored to be a part of Next Door Solutions’ mission of providing shelter, education, advocacy and the tools and skills necessary for financial freedom and self-sufficiency.”
“We at Next Door Solutions believe that it will take a community of men and women willing to stand together to combat domestic violence.” said Donna Knowlton, Director of Development for Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence. “Meriwest has done just that, and we are so grateful. Many women and their children will be able to create their own path toward safety, stability and self-sufficiency due to this amazing gift."
